[Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences] SHIGEMATSU Ryunosuke receives the Student Excellence Award from the SIGEC of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ)

Oct. 24, 2025

SHIGEMATSU Ryunosuke, a first-year student of the master’s course in the Frontier Media Science Program, the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences (NAKAMURA Satoshi Laboratory), received the Student Excellence Award from the Entertainment Computing Research Group of the Information Processing Society of Japan on March 21, 2025. This award is given to an outstanding research presentation by a student.

People manage time by looking at a clock on a daily basis, but when they are busy getting ready in the morning or when they are absorbed in work, their awareness of time decreases and it is difficult to remember even if they look at a clock. To solve this problem, SHIGEMATSU has proposed a way to change the size of the digital clock, such as hours, minutes, and seconds, depending on the user’s situation when looking at the clock. SHIGEMATSU also validated the usefulness of the method by examining delays in regularly scheduled tasks while encouraging immersion in puzzles. As a result, he found that the proposed highlighting method tends to reduce the number of times people look at their clock, and makes them less likely to be late even if they look at their clock less often.

In the future, SHIGEMATSU plans to add more experiments to test and build a system that keeps people on time.
