Rated “AA (Affirmed)” by Rating and Investment Information, Inc. (R&I)

On March 21, 2025, Meiji University received its ninth rating evaluation from the Rating and Investment Information, Inc. (R&I). The result was the same as last year: “AA (Affirmed)” [Rating Outlook: Stable]
The rating is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the university, such as the quality of the education and research, ability to recruit students, employment record, abundance of graduates, and efforts to promote internationalization and improve educational capabilities.
A school corporation rating reflects the rating agency’s opinion on the overall ability to perform all financial obligations incurred by a school corporation. The university obtained the rating for the following purposes.
・To confirm the school corporation evaluation from third parties, mainly in management and finance, and to obtain useful information contributing to management improvement.
・To inform prospective students, students and their parents that the university has established a stable management foundation so that students can attend with peace of mind.
・To make clear to graduates the results of their university’s management efforts
・To ensure the management and faculty members understand the current situation and challenges of the university and have common improvement goals

Meiji University also has affiliated high schools and junior high schools. A school corporation centered on Meiji University, which originated from Meiji Law School established in 1881, and has 10 schools, 12 graduate schools and 4 professional graduate schools. With its founding spirit of “Rights and Liberty, Independence, and Self-Government,” the university emphasizes the spirit of “Go Forward” to unlock the future by developing the personality. The number of students is about 37,000. The university is one of the largest in Japan. It is very well known, and thanks to its brand power and location of the campus, the university attracts many students from all over the country. Its social evaluation is excellent.
The ability to recruit students is extremely strong. The number of applicants in the academic year of 2025 has been higher than the previous year as of the end of February, and is expected to exceed 110,000 for the first time in six years.
Meiji University will use the support of the Japanese government to improve its education system. Meiji University was selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in fiscal 2024 as the Program for Supporting the Strengthening of Functions of Universities and Technical Colleges . Through this Program, Meiji University will increase the number of students in the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences and enhance education in mathematics, data science, and artificial intelligence with the aim of fostering advanced digital human resources. At the Ikuta Campus in Kawasaki City, which is used by the School of Science and Technology and the School of Agriculture, a new education building, Center Forest, is scheduled to be completed and open in the spring of 2025. In addition to classroom and library functions, there will be open learning spaces and spaces equipped with information facilities.
In 2021, Meiji University announced its long-term vision, MEIJI VISION 150 - Go Forward -, toward 2031, the 150 year anniversary of its foundation. Since then, Meiji University has systematically managed progress by setting targets for each priority measure. In December 2024, discussions on the Surugadai Campus Comprehensive Facilities Development Plan made great progress. The old facilities will be rebuilt over a period of 14 years, and the functions of Nakano Campus will be integrated into Surugadai Campus. Meiji University also decided to acquire the land and buildings of Hilltop Hotel, which is adjacent to the University. Discussions will be advanced so that this site can be utilized as a function for student support, as well as a function for cooperation with the community and society. Along with how to make effective use of the Nakano Campus, the university will review the progress of Hilltop Hotel.
As a result of the increase in total school fees from the increase of the admission capacity sufficiency rate and the expansion of donations, the balance of income and expenditure before incorporation into the basic fund in fiscal 2023 doubled from the previous year to about 6.7 billion yen. The balance in fiscal 2024 is approaching a level comparable to the rating, and indicators such as the ratio of retained earnings and the ratio of surplus assets under management have improved. If cash, deposits, and securities increase over the medium to long term, the ratio of retained earnings is expected to match the rating.
