[School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences] Enhancing data science and AI education under MEXT Support Program
Mar. 24, 2025
Since its establishment in April 2013, the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences has been engaged in education and research based on mathematical science, under the philosophy of "creating, advancing and disseminating mathematical science to benefit society." The new School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences will start operations from FY 2026 with a renamed department and an improved curriculum, aiming to further enhance education related to data science and artificial intelligence (AI).
As the world increasingly turns to large-scale data utilization to address various challenges, AI is expected to bring about transformative societal changes. Mathematical science plays a crucial role in driving these innovative technologies.
The Meiji University Mathematical Data Science Artificial Intelligence Expert Development Program was adopted as part of the 2026 MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Support Program for Enhancing the Functions of Universities and Technical Colleges, under Item 2, “Support for Enhancing Functions to Develop and Secure Experts in Advanced Information Technology.”
The program is planned to systematize and strengthen education at the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences, in mathematics, data science, and artificial intelligence, with the goal of fostering advanced digital talent with a bird’s eye view, universal perspective, and practical skills based on mathematical science.
Ahead of the planned enhancement of the Graduate School in FY 2030, the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, which forms its foundation, will begin implementing the following initiatives from FY 2026.
Changes and enhancements starting FY 2026
1. Renaming the department from “Department of Mathematical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis” to “Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis”
Mathematical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis encompasses three key areas: modeling, which extracts essential information from phenomena and formulates them as mathematical science problems; simulation, which reproduces phenomena through computational methods; and mathematical analysis, which provides deep theoretical insights into the properties and meanings expressed by mathematical formulae. Since its establishment, the department has emphasized education in mathematical science and statistical science, both fundamental to data science and AI.
The academic content on statistics, data science and AI will be enhanced (See "4. Strengthening data science and AI curricula"), and more subjects in the field of statistical science will be added to the seminar courses for graduation research. The department will be renamed to better reflect the new educational content.
2. Increasing enrollment capacity
The enrollment limits for both the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis and the Department of Network Design will be increased from 90 to 105 students. By increasing enrollment capacity, the university seeks to boost the number of students advancing to the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences and develop an education system to train and send out advanced digital talent, aligning with the objectives of the MEXT Support Program for Enhancing the Functions of Universities and Technical Colleges.
3. Increasing the number of faculty members
The university plans to enhance the research guidance system by adding five faculty members specializing in data science and AI (four Senior Assistant Professors and one Professor), introducing new courses to enrich the curriculum, and expanding graduation research themes related to data science and AI.
4. Strengthening data science and AI curricula
The School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences currently offers 41 courses aligned with the Mathematics, Data Science and AI Smart Higher Education Programs (Advanced Literacy Level). In addition, the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis*1 and the Department of Network Design will introduce the following new courses.
Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis: Mathematics of Time Series Analysis and Generative Models; Machine Learning Programming Exercise
Department of Network Design Edge AI Systems; Natural Language Processing
*The course names are tentative and may change as plans evolve.
Data Science and AI Education in the School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences and the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences
The School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences and the Graduate School of Advanced Mathematical Sciences offer an educational program that provides a systematic learning experience grounded in mathematical science, aimed at fostering data scientists as creators skilled in data science and AI, with the ability to develop new methodologies of their own.
