On January 29, 2025, NOSO Takumi (a third-year student at the NAKAMURA Satoshi Laboratory, Department of Frontier Media Science) received a Student Encouragement Award at the meeting of the Human-Computer Interaction (HIC) Research Group of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), held at the Okinawa Industry Support Center.
This award honors students for outstanding presentations. NOSO presented on “
Effects of Pen Tip Friction on Writing Stability in the Pursuit of Better Writing Comfort.”
While many people have specific preferences for their writing tools, the limited variety of pens for tablets and other digital devices makes it challenging to find the perfect match.
Focusing on this issue, NOSO measured handwriting shake caused by varying levels of friction from different stylus pen tips and explored methods to identify the most comfortable pen tip for each individual. Experiments also suggest that there is some degree of correlation between handwriting stability and writing comfort, and that the dominant hand may influence which characters individuals find easiest to write (for example,
永 for right-handed,
あ for left-handed).
In the next phase, the method will be further refined, aiming to develop a system that can suggest the ideal pen tip simply by holding a pen and writing.
