Oh-Meiji Scholarship brings together 177 recipients as tuition costs fall to levels comparable to those at national and public universities

The Student Support Office held an awards ceremony and networking event for Oh-Meiji Scholarship recipients at Izumi Campus on September 18. A total of 177 recipients, ranging from first-year to fourth-year students, participated.
The Oh-Meiji Scholarship is a pre-admission scholarship program independently established by Meiji University in the 2019 academic year. It is intended to provide financial support to prospective students who demonstrate strong academic performance but face financial hardship. Students who meet the household financial and academic performance criteria continue to receive the scholarship for four years while enrolled at the University.
Because the scholarship covers an amount equivalent to half of annual tuition and does not need to be repaid, it effectively brings tuition costs down to a level comparable to those at Japan’s national and public universities. Up to 1,000 students may receive the scholarship. Beginning with applications for students entering the University in the 2025 academic year, the household financial criteria were relaxed for applicants from outside the Tokyo metropolitan area, making it easier for them to apply.
In her remarks at the awards ceremony, HAYAKAWA Sachiko, Associate Dean, Student Affairs, expressed her hopes for the recipients, saying, “As fellow students brought together through the Oh-Meiji Scholarship, I hope you will form connections that transcend the boundaries of schools, departments, and years of study. I also hope you will make full use of this scholarship during your valuable time at the University to develop your potential.”
At the networking event, HIROSE Yoshihiro, a member of the Student Affairs Committee, gave a talk on “What I hope you will pursue during your time at the University” and “A message for students entering the workforce.” This was followed by informal group gatherings, where recipients who had come to Meiji University from across Japan interacted with one another.
Comments in the participants’ student life reports included the following: “I come from a single-parent household and had financial concerns, but thanks to the scholarship, I am able to enjoy a fulfilling student life with less strain on my family’s finances,” and “Because I do not have to worry about placing a financial burden on my family, I am able to make the most of my student life.”
The Oh-Meiji Scholarship is funded in part by donations made to the University. Meiji University will continue to provide scholarship support so that as many students as possible can pursue their studies with peace of mind.
