SURUGADAI 6.0 of the Meiji University’s 150 Year Anniversary Celebration Project starts: All institutes and facilities on the Nakano Campus will be integrated into the Surugadai Campus in about 10 years

Dec. 25, 2024

Meiji University has been studying the Surugadai Campus Comprehensive Facility Development Plan to reconstruct the aged facilities on the Surugadai Campus sequentially. We are pleased to announce that we have decided on the basic concept of the plan and will materialize the facility development based on the plan.

Points
・SURUGADAI 6.0, a large-scale facility development plan that serves as the core of the 150 year anniversary project
・The concept is to create a new campus where physical and virtual spaces are fused together.
・All institutes and facilities on the Nakano Campus will be integrated into the Surugadai Campus in about 10 years.

Background and details

This plan is positioned as a key objective of the facility development plan in the MEIJI VISION 150—Go Forward, which defines the ideal image of Meiji University in preparation for the 150 year anniversary of its founding in 2031. This is a long-term facility development project to reconstruct and renovate facilities across the Surugadai Campus over a period of 14 years from the first year of construction, with a focus on many aged school buildings located in the Sarugakucho area of the Surugadai Campus (the site of the former Meiji University Junior High School and High School).

In studying this plan, we drew up SURUGADAI 6.0, the concept that describes what the Surugadai Campus should look like in the future. The concept calls for creating a new campus where physical and virtual spaces are fused together and aims to create a place (space) for education and research where the development of knowledge can be further expanded by connecting with not only students and faculty but also people around the world without barriers.

This plan is based on the assumption that all institutes and facilities currently located on the Nakano Campus will be integrated into the Surugadai Campus in about 10 years. This is based on the idea that in order to realize SURUGADAI 6.0, it is necessary to coordinate the education and research capabilities of the Nakano Campus with the various institutes and facilities on the Surugadai Campus. This integration will promote the fusion of multiple disciplines of education and research, and more interdisciplinary and advanced education and research will be developed at the Surugadai Campus. The use of the Nakano Campus after the integration will be discussed by the Board of Trustees, taking what is required of universities by society, etc. into consideration.

Future prospects

At the new Surugadai Campus, which will be reborn under SURUGADAI 6.0, a large-scale construction and relocation is planned, including the construction of a new education building and a new faculty office building, which will be shared by all the institutes currently located on the Nakano Campus and Surugadai Campus, the construction of the Student Center, which will be a place for students’ extracurricular activities, and the rearrangement of various institutes and facilities after the renovation of other school buildings.

As outlined above, this plan is intended to facilitate a major change in the organization of the institutes and facilities located on the campuses and, at the same time, is a facility development project for the development of the Surugadai Campus for the next generation.
