Students who can register "Japanese Language Program for International Students”
This course is available for exchange students in all schools and regular students in Professional Graduate Schools.
Credits can be earned if grade requirements are met.
The Japanese 1-8 levels of the Japanese Language Program for International Students have achievement goals set for each of the four language skills. Each subject has learning objectives in line with these goals.
There are the 9 levels in Japanese Language Program shown below.
Your level is decided based on the result of the Placement Test which is conducted before the semester starts.
Most of Japanese classes are offered at SURUGADAI campus.

Introductory, Beginner |
There are three levels intended for those who have not studied Japanese before to help them in daily life and as students at the university. The aim of the course is to achieve basic competence in Japanese. There are four classes per week. |
| Japanese 4 to Japanese 8 |
Pre-intermediate to upper-intermediate |
There are 5 levels. Students can learn Japanese language skills that will be useful for study and research at universities. Each level has both comprehensive and skill-based courses, and students can choose the courses they need. Comprehensive subjects for Japanese 4 to 6 are offered three times a week, and all other subjects are skill-based and offered once a week. |

Syllabus, Timetable, and Course Registration Guide
The syllabus and timetable for AY2026 are expected to be released around March 2026.
Step 1. Respond the questionnaires
-Respond to the "Questionnaires on Japanese Language Program."
- Please note that any applicants who fail to respond to the questionnaires by the due date will not be eligible to take the Japanese language course.
-Two kinds of tests will be used to place students in the appropriate classes.
(1) Web test (Online test)
(2) Interview (Face-to-face, at SURUGADAI Campus)
-To be held in person at Meiji University's Surugadai Campus.
-Campus tour by Meiji University Students is included for new students.
Step.4 Provisional-enrollment

Counseling by a Japanese course coordinator will be offered during the period of self-enrollment.
Step. 5 Class Starts (Spring semester : April 10th, Fall semester : September 20 th)
-Attend the first class of the course in which you have been placed.
-Please register using the online form. Instructions will be given at orientation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Please explain the levels from Japanese 1 to Japanese 8.
The class levels progress from Japanese 1 to Japanese 8, with each level becoming more advanced. For detailed information about each class, please refer to the syllabus.

Students who wish to take Japanese courses must take the placement test before classes begin.
If the test result does not match the level of the course you hope to take, the Japanese Language Education Center may recommend a more appropriate class.
Q2. Can I take classes at different levels?
No, you cannot. Japanese courses are organized by level, so students must take all Japanese classes at the same level.
(Example: If you take Japanese 5 (comprehensive), you can also take "Reading", "Speaking", and "Writing" classes at the level 5.)
Q3. Do I have to attend all sessions if a course meets multiple times a week?
Yes. You must attend all class sessions. If you cannot attend all sessions, you cannot register for the course.
Q4. Do I need to purchase the textbooks?
Yes. You must purchase the designated textbooks and workbooks (officially published) specified by the university.
They can be purchased at bookstores affiliated with Meiji University, or you may buy them on your own at bookstores or online.
Q5. I have studied Japanese on my own. I don’t know which level is suitable for me.
All students wishing to take Japanese classes must take the Placement Test. You will be informed of the appropriate level based on your test results.
Q6. Can I change my registered courses after the semester begins?
Please consult both your faculty/graduate school and the Japanese Language Education Center.
If permission is granted, you may change your Japanese courses within the designated period.
Q7. Do I have to pay for Japanese classes?
If you are an exchange student at Meiji University or a regular international student enrolled in a professional graduate school, there is no fee for Japanese classes.
However, you must purchase your own textbooks.
