“Japanese Language Program for International Students”

Students who can register "Japanese Language Program for International Students”

This course is available for exchange students in all schools and regular students in Professional Graduate Schools. 
Credits can be earned if grade requirements are met.

Achievement Goals

The Japanese 1-8 levels of the Japanese Language Program for International Students have achievement goals set for each of the four language skills. Each subject has learning objectives in line with these goals. 

Class Levels

 There are the 9 levels in Japanese Language Program shown below.
Your level is decided based on the result of the Placement Test which is conducted before the semester starts.
Most of Japanese classes are offered at SURUGADAI campus.

Subject Level Contents
Japanese 1 to Japanese 3 Introductory, Beginner There are three levels intended for those who have not studied Japanese before to help them in daily life and as students at the university. The aim of the course is to achieve basic competence in Japanese. There are four classes per week.
Japanese 4 to Japanese 8 Pre-intermediate to upper-intermediate  There are 5 levels. Students can learn Japanese language skills that will be useful for study and research at universities. Each level has both comprehensive and skill-based courses, and students can choose the courses they need. Comprehensive subjects for Japanese 4 to 6 are offered three times a week, and all other subjects are skill-based and offered once a week.
Japanese (Advanced) Advanced Classes are divided by skills and are designed to help students acquire more advanced Japanese language skills. 1 class is offered per week.

How to register

Step 1. Respond the questionnaires

-Respond to the "Questionnaires on Japanese Language Program." 
Please note that any applicants who fail to respond to the questionnaires by the due date will not be eligible to take the Japanese language course.

Step 2. Placement Test

 -Two kinds of tests will be used to place students in the appropriate classes.
 (1) Web test (Online test) 
 (2) Interview (Face-to-face, at SURUGADAI Campus)

Step.3   Orientation

 -To be held in person at Meiji University's Surugadai Campus.
-Campus tour by Meiji University Students is included for new students.

Step.4 Provisional-enrollment

 - To be completed on Oh-o!Meiji system.
 - Click here about how to set it up.
 - Counseling by a Japanese course coordinator will be offered during the period of self-enrollment.

Step. 5 Class Starts (Spring semester : April 10th, Fall semester : September 20 th)

 -Attend the first class of the course in which you have been placed.

Step.6   Registration

 -Please register using the online form. Instructions will be given at orientation. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Please tell me the level of Japanese 1 to 8.

The level of the class goes up from Japanese 1 to Japanese 8. Please refer to Syllabus for the detailed class contents.
For the class level of each subject, please refer to the "
Achievement Goals for Japanese Language Program*".
Only the Japanese version is currently available. English version is coming up soon.

Students will be required to take the Placement Test before the class begins. If there is any discrepancy between the courses students wish to take and levels of they are placed, Japanese Language Education Center may recommend that the student take the appropriate course.

Q2. Can I take classes at different levels?

No, you can't. Students shall take classes at the same level.
(Example: If you take Japanese 5 (comprehensive), you can also take "Reading", "Speaking", and "Writing" classes at the level 5.

Q3. Do I have to attend all classes with multiple classes a week?

Yes. You can't register any classes if you can't attend all of them.

Q4. Do I need to buy textbooks?

Yes. Students are required to purchase the textbooks and workbooks (officially published) designated by the university. You can purchase them at a bookstore affiliated with Meiji University. You may also purchase them on your own at bookstores, online stores, etc.

Q5. I have studied Japanese on my own. I don't know the right level for me.

Please refer to the guidelines for the levels listed in Syllabus and Q1 to make sure the level suitable for you.  And also, everyone wishing to take Japanese classes is required to take the placement test . You will be notified which level to take based on the result of the placement test. 

Q6. Can I change classes after the registration?

It can be changed only during the registration period. 

Q7. Is there a fee for Japanese classes?

No fee is charged. However, textbooks need to be purchased by your own.
