GSBA Students Experience Study Abroad Program at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Apr. 07, 2026

The Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) dispatched three students participating in the Double Degree Program to the Kuala Lumpur Campus of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) from February to March this year.

Two of the participating students attended a two-week intensive English course organized by UTM (*). In this course, they learned presentation skills, speech organization, and email writing in English from three UTM instructors.

In addition to language training, the program included field trips to various locations in Kuala Lumpur, providing opportunities to deepen their understanding of Malaysian culture.
They also attended local classes and had the opportunity to introduce Japanese culture to UTM students.

After completing the intensive course, the students carried out necessary procedures at UTM such as student registration and health checkups, while also interacting with UTM faculty members in charge of the Double Degree Program.

Upon completing the approximately one-month program, two students have returned to Japan, while one student will remain in Malaysia to continue a long-term study program, including attending classes at UTM.
* The intensive English course is mandatory for GSBA students participating in the Double Degree Program; however, it may be waived for those who meet the required English proficiency test scores.

Student Feedback (Excerpts)
• The faculty members at UTM were all very kind and warmly welcomed us. Despite the important period of Ramadan, they kindly took us to dinners and showed us various places. Whenever we had questions or faced difficulties, they responded promptly, which was extremely helpful.

During my stay, I explored topics I had not previously been interested in, such as religion, and learned about Malaysia’s history, politics, economy, and society. This broadened my perspective and allowed me to view things from multiple angles.

In particular, the sense that “different cultures coexist and blend together,” which is difficult to fully experience in Japan, was something I could truly appreciate only by staying for an extended period, visiting various places, and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. It was an invaluable and enriching experience, and I was able to spend a memorable month. I would like to continue dedicating myself to the Double Degree Program and my research activities going forward.

• I was not confident in my English at all, but I am very glad that I decided to study abroad. The schedule can be more demanding than usual, but I found it to be a highly rewarding experience that strengthened both my confidence and abilities. Daily life there is manageable—even with just a smartphone—so I would encourage others not to hesitate to take part in this program.
