Meiji University Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives

Toward a university that embraces diverse values and learns and co-creates together

Meiji University upholds its founding spirit of “Rights, Liberty, Independence, and Self-government” and its educational philosophy of “a university that strengthens individuals.” Based on this spirit and philosophy, we have fostered individuals who, even as members of society and organizations, are aware of their missions and roles from a global perspective and who shine as individuals while pursuing cooperation and coexistence with others.

Meiji University considers it its responsibility to contribute to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society through the creation of knowledge and the development of human resources for the world and the future. The creation of knowledge and the development of human resources can only be achieved by embracing diversity in all its forms. With the aim of becoming a university that embraces diverse values, learns together, and co-creates for the future, we hereby issue the Meiji University Diversity and Inclusion Declaration.

1. Meiji University regards diversity and inclusion as the foundation of a co-creative future, embraces and respects all forms of diversity.
2. Meiji University is committed to developing an inclusive campus environment where students from diverse backgrounds, including gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, and race, can fully realize their potential and participate equally in education, research, and other university activities.
3. Guided by its founding spirit of Rights, Liberty, Independence, and Self-Government, Meiji University promotes reasonable accommodations for students from diverse backgrounds.
4. Based on its educational philosophy of fostering the development of the individual, Meiji University respects the human rights of every person and strives to create a university free from discrimination, prejudice, and human rights violations.

Meiji University Gender Equity Plan

Meiji University Basic Plan for Promoting Gender Equality (“Gender Equity Plan”) was established to advance efforts toward realizing diversity and inclusion from the perspective of gender equality by all members of Meiji University Incorporated and its affiliated schools. Based on the Gender Equity Plan and its medium- to long-term plans, Meiji University is promoting a range of initiatives to achieve these objectives. 

General Employer Action Plan & Data collection and monitoring

Meiji University collects and monitors data related to the Gender Equity Plan and publishes the results in an annual report. These data also include information disclosed in accordance with the Act on the Promotion of Women’s Active Engagement in Professional Life.

Training and Awareness-Raising Activities on Gender Equality and Unconscious Bias

In line with the Gender Equity Plan, the annual reports provide information on training and awareness-raising activities on gender equality and unconscious bias carried out by the University’s various departments.
