Meiji SPSE Summer Program: Explore Japan: Politics, Economy and Society !







Feel the spirit of Japan in the heart of Tokyo!

The program accepts students from all partner institutions of the School of Political Science and Economics (SPSE) of Meiji University.This program has become an opportunity for students to interact with each other while it has deepned their understanding of the different cultures.
Students who join the program attend specialized lectures conducted in English by faculty members of the SPSE on politics, economics, and society in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region for about two weeks. The program also includes off-campus activities; a visit to the Diet and the Tokyo Stock Exchange to have a better understanding of Japanese politics, economy, and history.
Besides the lectures and academic activities, the students participate in a weekend trip to Seminar House located in Yamanaka area with SPSE students belonging to "The Supporters", a student committee of the SPSE which promote cultural exchanges between students.

Eligibility and Capacity

(1) Eligibility

 
1 Students who belong to one of our partner universities/ departments.
2 Students who have one of the following official documents or an English proficiency test certificate:
TOEIC 500, TOEFL iBT 52, IELTS 4.5, CU-TEP 60 or above, CET4 or CET6
3 Students who can attend the entire three-week program. ※No late arrivals or early departures.
4 Students must be physically and mentally fit to participate in this program in Japan.
5 Students will be asked to participate cooperatively in group activities as part of the program’s requirements.

*For #2 English requirements, if you do not have any official documents, the SPSE would accept the submission of recommendation letter indicating that you have similar English level. Please consult with the SPSE via a coordinator of your home university before you apply for the program.

(2) Capacity

15 students (min.) ~45 students (max.)
* If the number of applicants surpass the expected capacity, the SPSE may have to set a maximum number of applicants per partner university.

FAQ

Q. Can I arrive later than the program starts? Can I leave earlier than the last day of the program?

A. No. Participants of this program must attend all the courses, fieldworks, a weekend trip, activities, events during the program.
Please arrive in Tokyo by the day before the program starts and depart from Tokyo on the day after the program finishes to fully participate in this program.

Q. Does this program offer accommodation for its participants?

A. There are two options for the program participants.
(1) Stay in a hotel arranged by Meiji University (a single room)
(2) Arrange accommodation on your own
*If you wish to stay in a hotel arranged by Meiji University, please apply for a room when you make an online application for the program.

*Check-in: Sunday, June22, Check-out: Saturday, July 12 (total 20 nights)
*Price for 2025 Summer 182,600JPY (9,130JPY per night including tax and service charge)
*No meals, a single room with free Wi-Fi

Q. Does this program offer Visa related support for its participants?

A. Please visit and confirm with your nearest Embassy of Japan or Japanese Consulate General regarding whether if you need to obtain a visa to participate in this program.
If you need an invitation letter and/or a letter of guarantee to apply for a visa, Meiji University will issue one and send it to our partner university. For other documents which are necessary to apply for a visa, participants and/or our partner university must prepare them on their own.

QDo I need to join travel insurance to participate in this program?

A. Participants of this program will be covered by an inbound insurance(*) which Meiji University joins for the program.
Please note that the inbound insurance only covers the period of the program (from the first day of the program to the last day of the program) and it does not cover property damage etc.

In case participants wish to join insurance which covers the period and items beyond what are covered by the inbound insurance, they need to purchase overseas travel insurance on their own.
Also, if your home university requires you to join a certain type of insurance, please follow their instruction and join insurance in addition to the inbound insurance which Meiji University joins for the program participants.

Q. Does this program offer credits to its participants?

A. No. The School of Political Science and Economics of Meiji University does not provide any credits in this program.
However, participants will receive a certificate of completion when they finish the whole program.

Q. Does this program arrange airport pick-up to/from the airport?

A. No. Participants of this program need to arrange transportation from/to the airport on their own.
Also, from the accommodation to Surugadai Campus of Meiji University, they need to commute by public transportation.
