Message from the Director

The Meiji University Center for Gender Equality and Diversity was established in February 2015 following an evolutional reorganization of the Meiji University Gender Equality Promotion Committee (established in April 2009) triggered by its adoption in fiscal 2014 as a project subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to foster science and technology personnel under the “Support project for female researchers’ research activities (Organizations)” (period: fiscal 2014 ~ 2016), and onwards to the present day.Under this support project, we have established researcher support systems, such as research support and childcare support for researchers during their life events as well as working to enhance the organizational infrastructure and awareness-raising activities, etc. to promote gender equality and diversity. These measures are now fully embedded and continue to have our support even though the project has concluded.Furthermore, a university-wide questionnaire has confirmed that awareness of gender-equality, diversity and work-life balance has increased thanks to this support project.
Under this support project, while deliberating matters pertaining to the promotion of gender equality and diversity throughout the university, the need to draft a comprehensive plan was discussed by the Center Steering Committee, which then drew up the Meiji University Basic Plan for Promoting Gender Equality between academia and the educational corporation that came into effect on December 1, 2016.On the other hand, the Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace, and the Act to Advance the Elimination of Discrimination based on Handicap were enacted under the law, came into force from April 1, 2016.In the modern era, we believe that the promotion of comprehensive diversity and inclusion is indispensable with an emphasis on the “diversity of perspectives” while continuing to work on our universal approach to gender equality and diversity in line with the “Basic Plan”.All members of the university must be able to work equally and strive to foster an environment of respect for all throughout the campus, regardless of any perceived “difference.” Your understanding and cooperation in this regard is appreciated.
