Located in the Chiisagata district of Nagano prefecture, the Center for Obsidian and Lithic Studies is Japan’s only research facility dedicated to obsidian and human history. Based on previous research outcomes, the center has established a new theme of human-resource-environment systems and launched several multidisciplinary research projects related to archeological, geological, paleo-environmental, and cultural property studies. The center is moving forward with research on the dynamic movements of human being in response to various natural resources, including obsidian. Collaborative work is being done with related institutions in Russia, China, Korea, and the US, making the Center for Obsidian and Lithic Studies a central hub in an international network for obsidian research.
