Reference Services

The reference services help you to use materials, find information, and use the library. For example

  • How to find books and journal articles on research themes
  • How to use the database
  • How to use materials that are not in the library

Ask a Librarian

If you ask a question at the reference counter, we will investigate and answer it on the spot. If further investigation is required, the answer will be sent by e-mail in about one week.

ILL (Interlibrary Loan) - Copy request

If the libraries do not have the article you need, we will request a copy from another library. You can order photocopies at the reference counter or online through WebOPAC. The copies can be picked up at the reference counter.
Notice
  • Photocopies will be made in compliance with the copyright law.
  • If the number of photocopied pages exceeds 50, please apply for the ILL Loan.
Fees
  • In principle, there is no charge for students, Academic Staff (tenured, non-tenured). However, in some cases, a fee may be charged.
  • For those not listed above, 35-60 yen per sheet (tax included) and postage will be charged. In addition, basic charges may apply in some cases.
Time taken for copies to arrive
It usually takes one week from your request to the arrival of copies at the library. It takes longer when copies are sent from overseas or if the request involves some special procedures.

DDS (Document Delivery Service) *Delivery Service by email

DDS is a service provided by Reprints Desk. You can get the PDF of the article.
DDS availability
The DDS covers articles published in foreign journals that are not available in the libraries or in E-journals.
User category Fees
Undergraduates / Graduates Free up to 3 articles a month. 2,200 yen (tax included) for more.
Academic Staff (tenured, non-tenured) / Emeritus Professors 2,200 yen per article (tax included)

*Please pay the fee at the reference counter.
How to order
  • Please submit through the ILL Copy Request on the WebOPAC.
  • Write "DDS Request" in the "Notes" field of the request form.
How to download DDS documents
  • We will send the download URL by email. The URL for downloading is valid for one month.
  • For copyright protection purposes, the downloaded document may be used only by one individual and in one copy.
  • You may not send the PDF file of the article by e-mail or make a copy of it on a storage medium such as a hard disk. Please be sure to print out a copy for storage and use.

ILL (Interlibrary Loan) - Loan Request

If the book you need is not available in the libraries, please submit ILL Loan request at the reference counter or online through WebOPAC.
Fees
Round-trip shipping costs are required. Other basic fees may apply.
Time taken for the arrival of ILL books
It takes about one week for domestic orders, and about three weeks for overseas orders. In some cases, it may take longer.
The use of ILL books
  • ILL books can only be used in the library. They cannot be checked out.
  • The loan period is about 3 weeks.
  • Photocopying is available in compliance with the copyright law.

A letter of introduction for non-Meiji University libraries

You can visit other libraries to use materials that are not available in our libraries. If you would like to visit other libraries, please ask at the reference counter for a letter of introduction. To receive a letter of introduction, you need to make an appointment in advance, so please apply well in advance.

Some university libraries can be visited without a letter of introduction. Please check the user guide of each university library on their website in advance.

NDL Digitized Contents Transmission Service for Libraries

This is a service in which materials are digitalized by NDL. These materials include mainly out of print books, Japanese classical books, journals and doctoral theses. For details please refer to the NDL website.
Lists of the materials accessible
The materials listed as [Available only at the NDL and partner libraries] when searching on the NDL Digital Collections.
How to access the contents
Please ask for details at the reference counter. The service is available in reference service hours. The documents in the NDL Digital Collections are forbidden to be saved as digital files, or on camera.
Printout service
A printout service for the documents is available in compliance with the copyright law. Librarians at the reference counter will print out documents for you, on application. Please be aware that this may take time because of the quality of imaging. The fee for the printout is 11 yen per sheet (tax included) for monochrome and 33 yen per sheet for color (tax included).
