Visa Status: Extension of Period of Stay

Q1. When should I apply for the extension of period of stay (“Student” visa)? (Updated on April 30)

Application for extension of period of stay will be accepted 3 months prior to the expiration date of the period of stay. We recommend you to apply ahead of time in order not to exceed the period of stay. Furthermore, as a precautionary measure against novel coronavirus infection, there have been changes in application procedure related to extension of period of stay. For details, please check following Q2 to Q5.

Q2. I will be able to apply for the extension of my visa in a few days (3 months before expiry date). Do I have to renew my visa even at this state of time? (Updated on May 18)

As a precautionary measure against novel coronavirus infections, for those who have a residence card which will expire between March to July, you will be able to apply for extension up to 3 months after the expiry date. However, once you exceed this extended expiry date, your stay will become illegal, so please apply for extension as soon as things settle down.

For those who have “temporary stay” visa, the above-mentioned extension is not applicable. If your “temporary stay” visa expires soon, please consult the Immigration Services Agency immediately.

Q3. Since I cannot visit the International Student Office because of the entrance restriction, how can I submit necessary documents for extending/changing my resident status?

Submission of documents should be made via postal mail and Oh-o! Meiji.

Q4. I need several certificates issued by the university to apply for extension of period of stay. How can I obtain them? (Updated on June 29)

The certificate-issuing machines will partially resume its operation, however, please be aware that the number of machines and their operating hours are different from usual. Therefore we recommend you to apply by postal mail for preventive measures against COVID-19 Infection. For details, please check the webpage of the school you belong to.

Q5. I have sent necessary documents for visa extension to the International Student Office. How long will it take to have completed documents back? (Updated on April 30)

As the campus entry restriction has been made, it has caused a delay in receiving postal items, and it will take around 2 weeks to have your documents sent back to you after confirmation. Considering this situation, please send the documents by postal mail ahead of time.

Q6. If my residence card is renewed during campus entry restriction, how can I inform the International Student Office? (Updated on April 22)

Log in to “Oh-o!Meiji”, then select “Group” tab. There is a column of “Submission of Residence Card”. Please upload the photo of your residence card. (Data file needs to be JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF.)

Visa Status: Related to Entry Restriction by Japanese Government and Certificate of Eligibility

Q1. What are the procedures I should take if I had entered Japan with a temporary stay visa?

As a general rule, changing the visa status from “temporary stay” to “student” in Japan is not allowed. Regarding this question, we have already sent announcements to new international students on April 13 via Oh-o! Meiji, so please check the announcement for details.

Q2. What should I do if my Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) gets expired due to the suspension of visa application in embassy or consulate of home country? (Updated on July 2)

The validity for Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) are temporary extended to 6 months from the date the entry restriction measures are lifted or until April 20, 2021, whichever comes first. For details, please check the link below.
To use CoE with validity exceeded 3 months at the diplomatic mission abroad, you will be required a special document from the university. Please check Oh-o!Meiji notification dated May 18 to obtain this document.

Q3. Due to the Japanese government entry restriction, what should I do if the expiry date for my current resident status comes before I can go back to Japan?

If your resident status expires, you will have to apply for CoE through Meiji University and obtain a study abroad visa again.

Q4. I am thinking of going back to my country temporally and taking Online Classes. In this case, what kind of visa procedure do I have to take? (Updated on April 22)

If you plan to return to Japan within one year after your departure and your residence card is still valid, please take the procedure of “Re-entry Permit” or “Special Re-entry System” at the airport on your departure. However, in case of returning to Japan after one year or your residence card expires while you are in your country, it will be necessary to obtain “Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)” again. Scholarships/Tuition Subsidy

Q1. How will “Batched Application” be conducted for AY2020? (Application Closed)

Batched Application: application method for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship, Meiji University Scholarship and Tuition Subsidy
For AY2020, Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship is separated from “Batched Application.” For the remaining two programs, the application guideline is now available from the webpage below. Please read the guideline carefully and prepare  for application.

For Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship (for current students), as we have already announced to current students via Oh-o! Meiji on April 6, application deadline was set to April 14. We will not accept applications for this scholarship in the Batched Application AY2020.

Q2. I am selected as a reserved applicant for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship (*for new international students). What are the procedures I should take? (Application Closed)

The application is closed.  We will contact selected applicants for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship through Oh-o! Meiji to inform necessary procedures such as monthly enrollment confirmation.
(The following was announced on April 22.)
We are now accepting applications for those who were selected as a reserved applicant through Oh-o! Meiji.  Application due date is Friday, April 24. Please note that even though when selected as a reserved applicant, you will lose eligibility if you do not complete all necessary procedures during the designated period.

Q3. Are applications to scholarships by external foundations open as usual? (Updated on June 1)

Due to the spread of novel coronavirus infections, some scholarships have changes in submission period. Furthermore, submission period and required documents differ by scholarships, so please check the individual application guidelines for details. 

Since the campus entry restrictions has been extended, the application documents must be sent to the International Student Office via postal mail (postmarked on or before its submission due date) or by email (by the due date). Direct submission to the office is prohibited.
If we need to change the submission method above due to the change of the campus entry restriction, we will announce in the university website below.

Q4. Due to the campus entry restriction, I cannot see my supervisors at the campus and ask them to write a recommendation letter for scholarships. What should I do? (Updated on May 12)

Please contact the supervisors by email, etc. and ask them for the recommendation letter sending via postal mail or PDF file attached to the email.
Some scholarships require the recommendation letter after internal screening by the university. (The recommendation letter is not necessary when applying.) 
Please be sure to check application guidelines as documents to be submitted depend on scholarships. 

Q5. I have not yet obtained “Student visa”. Can I still apply for internal scholarships for FY2020? (Updated on July 2)

We are conducting internal scholarships* for FY2020 with consideration not to cause any disadvantages to students who are not yet in Japan. For details, please be sure to read each guideline carefully.

Q1. Will the spread of novel coronavirus infections affect our programs? (Updated on July 2)

Based on the current situation of COVID-19 infection around the world, we decided to cancel "Fall University-wide Study Abroad Programs for AY2020". For details, please check the group page of Oh-o!Meiji.

For students who are thinking about applying for study abroad programs on Spring Semester, AY2021

Q1. I am thinking about applying for a study abroad program on spring semester AY2021. Since a state of emergency was declared, I am not able to take any language proficiency tests such as TOEFL and IELTS, and do not have language proficiency scores to submit. (Updated on July 2)

The submission due date for language proficiency scores is now extended for applicants planning to apply for study abroad programs on spring semester AY 2021. Furthermore, some institutions are also accepting TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. For details, please check application guidelines below.

Q2. What kinds of study abroad programs does International Student Office offer? (Updated on June 1)

Short term study abroad programs (Japanese only)
Study abroad programs that are conducted during long holidays for approximately one month. There are both programs for language skill improvement and programs focusing on hands on training.
*Taking into consideration of the current situation of  COVID-19 Infection around the world, all short term summer study abroad programs handled by the International Student Center will be cancelled.
 
Mid/Long term study abroad programs
Students will study at partner institutions of Meiji University for one semester or one year. For requirements of each program, please check the previous year’s application guideline from the link above.
 

Q3. Are there any scholarships/subsidy for study abroad programs?

Yes, we do have following three types of scholarships which all students can apply for. For details, please check the application guideline for each scholarship/subsidy.
