This area, which once faced the Sotoborigawa River, is the site of the main Edo residence of the Fukozu-Matsudaira clan. The clan ruled the Shimabara Domain in Hizen Province (present-day Nagasaki Prefecture)and other areas from 1691.
After the Meiji Restoration, the residence was saved from government appropriation. It was made available for hire and was a popular venue for campaign speeches and so on by societies calling for freedom and people’s rights.
On January 17, 1881, three young lawyers, Kishimoto Tatsuo, Miyagi Kozo, and Yashiro Misao, in a spirit of cooperation, rented part of the residence to open the Meiji Law School. This was the predecessor to Meiji University.
The School moved to Minamikogacho, Surugadai, Kanda-ku (present-day Kanda Surugadai) in 1886. The founders strived to foster a legal profession that could shoulder the modernization of Japan.
A monument to the birthplace of Meiji University was erected on this site in 1995.
