■演習テーマ / Theme
“Performances” in Daily Life and Art Scenes

“I am sure I gave a good performance during the interview”. - Haven’t you heard such expression? But what is a “performance”? Doesn’t it depend on audiences, situations, countries or cultural contexts, whether a performance is good or bad? On the other hand, “performance” can be a genre of art. After watching the performance, writers report saying for example: “This performance was so bad it can be ignored.”
 “Performances” in daily life and art scenes – The one in daily life can serve as a reference when thinking about the one in art scenes and vice versa. This is the core concept of this seminar. Each student is expected to research a theme related to the term “performance.”
■授業内容 / Activities
Each student is required to create a statement based on her/his own interest and then write a thesis. The core activities in each session are reporting about working processes and exchanging opinions among the students.
<3年次 / 3rd Year>
[Spring semester] After some introductory activities in the first sessions, each member introduces a book or an article that interests her/him. Together with this book or article, 10 sources should be listed with short descriptions about all these sources. Then the students select quotes from the 10 sources (They should be used in the thesis) and write the statement (This will be the conclusion of the thesis). The source list with the short descriptions, the quotes and the statement will be the term paper (A) which has to be submitted at the end of the semester.
[Fall semester] The members work on the structure of the thesis based on the term paper (A). A table of contents should be written including descriptions on the content of each chapter. After finishing the table of contents, each student starts writing the thesis. In the sessions, each student introduces a part of her/his thesis. Its content and next working steps will be discussed in class. The completed thesis has to be submitted at the end of the semester.

<4年次 / 4th Year>
Each student revises the submitted thesis by using 10 more sources, or writes a completely new thesis by using 20 sources. The working process is same as that of the third year.
