研究内容

　今の政治について「どうするべきか」を考えるためには、今の政治が「なぜ・どのように動いているのか」について検討する必要があります。現状を十分に検討せずに提言・提案を行えば、方向が間違っていたり、実現可能性が低かったりしかねないからです。本ゼミナールでは、政治の現状について客観的・論理的な理解を深めるために、科学的推論（実験・実証分析・数理理論）の方法を紹介します。そして、目の前にある問題について直感や思い込みを捨てて検討する力を身につけることを目指します。

ゼミナール活動の進め方

グループ・ディスカッションのようす

　３年次は科学的思考法を理解し、それに沿った研究方法の実践に触れます。まずは、現代政治分野の実証研究論文を英語で読解し、複雑な学術論文の論点を効果的につかめるようになることを目指します。同時に、社会科学の研究デザインのあり方、および実証的な分析を行うツールとしての統計ソフトRの使い方を学びます。そして、学んだ知識の実践として、社会科学実験をレプリケーションするグループプロジェクトにも取り組んでもらいます。４年次は、各自の関心に応じてテーマを設定し、３年次に身につけた研究の方法を活かして、卒業論文に取り組みます。

卒業論文テーマの例

　卒業論文テーマとしては、有権者の政治行動・政治意識形成のプロセス、および有権者と政治家・政府・メディアとの関係を中心に、現代政治全般に関心がある人を歓迎します。地域的な関心は、日本やアメリカを始め、世界中どこの国でも構いません。卒業論文では、統計的手法を用いた実証分析もしくは数理理論を用いた理論分析をすることを要件とします。

【ゼミの案内 / About our "Zemi"】

The goal of this seminar is to acquire skills to conduct and evaluate scientific study of politics (i.e., statistical analysis of quantitative data). For third-year students, readings will cover topics around scientific research design with a special focus on experiments, and workshops will provide practical experience of using statistical software R. They will also be working on group projects to replicate existing survey experiment. Fourth year students will individually work on their senior theses, with the requirement of including the original statistical analysis of quantitative data.

Welcome to Meiji! This seminar is mostly conducted in Japanese, but I appreciate diverse perspectives from students and am happy to provide English support if necessary. The instructor's specialty is in studies of public opinion and voting behavior in Japan, while those with diverse interests in objective/scientific analysis of contemporary politics are welcome.
