What brought you to study abroad in Japan? Why did you choose Meiji University? /

My motivation for studying abroad in Japan was that I’d already been interested in Japanese culture—J-pop, anime, TV dramas, and so on. At the same time, I wanted to experience life in Japan as a resident rather than as a tourist, and to improve my foreign-language ability. When I applied, I prioritized the Greater Tokyo area and the Keihanshin region because of their convenience and quality of life. I had also heard that Meiji is regarded as the leading university among the MARCH group. After going through the preference ranking and my school’s internal selection process, I ultimately came to Meiji University.

What do you like about Meiji University? /

(1) What is your favorite place on the campuses of Meiji University? /

I like the Sky Lounge Akatsuki on the 17th floor of Liberty Tower. The space is spacious and the view is pleasant—you can take in the scenery from Kanda to Marunouchi—so enjoying an affordable campus meal there is a real treat.

(2) What is your favorite subject (course) at Meiji University? /

Course title: Level 5 Japanese class (Lecturer: Sakai, Kawano, and Iijima)
I really like the Level 5 Japanese class co-taught by Prof. Sakai, Kawano and Iijima.
Their teaching is lively and engaging, and they explain things in a clear, accessible way, which has been really helpful for learning Japanese.

How is your life in Japan? /

Commuter trains during rush hour are unbelievably crowded—it's pretty terrifying. Even late at night, the Keio Line is still packed with passengers.

The biggest challenge really is the language. Other than that, things are mostly fine.

As an exchange destination, Meiji is a great choice. The university takes excellent care of exchange students: they arrange housing in a conveniently located dorm with impressive facilities, organize lots of extracurricular activities geared toward exchange students, and there are also student groups dedicated to welcoming international students.
