What brought you to study abroad in Japan? Why did you choose Meiji University? /

What brought me to Japan is mainly due to familiarity with Japanese culture and food which is due to the fact that I grew up surrounded by Japanese culture even in my home country. My previous five visits to Japan as a tourist left a positive impression on me and as such, Japan became a first-priority for me in choosing a country for my exchange program. After evaluating criteria regarding academic requirements, reputation, location and living standards, I chose Meiji University due to the fact that it has the balance of the above four factors with its location in the heart of Tokyo in Chiyoda-ku and convenient commute by multiple major rail and subway lines, alongside its stellar reputation in the field of liberal arts.

Do you take the Advanced Seminar course? If so, tell us the name of professor, the contents of the class, and what you like about Advanced Seminar.

Prof. Unno Motoo

Regarding advanced seminar courses, I read reviews of prior exchange students, and saw that Prof. Motoo Unno’s zemi was highly regarded among many exchange students. I ended up signing up for his class and it was very much a class based around learning through activities and field trips to embassies and other diplomatic venues. Even outside of class, his class is also filled with extra-curricular activities such as the time I and many other students of his zemi got to watch a baseball match, which was also the very first time experiencing a baseball match for me.

What do you like about Meiji University? /

(1) What is your favorite place on the campuses of Meiji University? /

Personally, my favorite place on the Surugadai campus would be Liberty Tower and its respective facilities such as the 17th floor canteen and its various student lounges such as Lounge Zero and Lounge Marronier. The late-1990s post-modern aesthetics and the general layout of the building inspires a sense of wanting to be there to learn, or to study, or to socialize with other students.
The canteen within Liberty Tower, the Sky Lounge Akatsuki, is also very much unique due to its 17th floor location which gives you a view of the heart of Tokyo from its vast windows, alongside offering affordable and delicious meals with rotating choices every week.

(2) What is your favorite subject (course) at Meiji University? /

Course title: Comprehensive Japanese 1 (Lecturer: Prof. Kawano Takako & Prof. Xu Yan)

Aside from the previously mentioned Prof. Unno's Seminar, my favourite course is Comprehensive Japanese 1 (Prof. Kawano Takako & Prof. Xu Yan) due to the fact that it is my first true introduction to Japanese as a language and how it is meant to be studied. It is very much a class that is “just right”, not overtly difficult but very much not a class where you can just take it easy. Especially for classes held by Prof. Kawano, the class is very lively and engaging, giving you the willpower to push through and making understanding Japanese clear and accessible.

How is your life in Japan? /

(1) What made you surprised during the study abroad in Japan? /

One thing that surprised me quite a lot is how Tokyo-area commuter trains are very crowded beyond comprehension, even at unexpected times such as late at night or even on weekends. With my dorm being at Meidaimae station, a transfer point between the Keio Line and the Inokashira Line, I got what is basically a front row seat to how crowded Tokyo-area trains can truly be, even having to wait for the next train to get on a train to get to my class sometimes with how crammed they can be.

(2) Comparing with your student life in/at your home country/institution, do you find anything that you particularly enjoy as well as anything challenging for you in your student life here in Japan?

■Things you particulartly enjoy /
So many things are far more enjoyable than in my home country, such as the sheer variety in shopping and dining and entertainment, and interacting with local students and students of other nations and other cultural backgrounds. Tokyo’s world-class transit network is also a key component on why living and studying here is far more enjoyable than in my home city of Bangkok, where you could practically go anywhere in Tokyo and the Kanto region on a whim within an hour or two. Also being able to use 1 transit card for every mode of transit and every transit operator in Tokyo, unlike in Bangkok, Thailand where I need 2 different transit cards and cash, is a massive quality of life improvement.

■Things challenging for you / 大変なところ
Trying to navigate Japan’s vast retail industry and its sheer number of retailers in order to get my groceries and household goods is abit of a challenge especially compared to my home country of Thailand where you could practically get close to all you need for your daily living in like, three supermarket chains or even convenience stores. This is also made harder due to the fact that not all stores will sell everything; for example, having to go to a drugstore to get things such as laundry detergent since most supermarkets and convenience stores do not sell it.

About yourself and messages /

(1) What is your dream for the future? /

Unsure yet, but in terms of education, a master’s degree in a field such as political science or internation relations especially in Japan is very much on the cards for me.

(2) Please introduce your home institution and your country./

A day at my home university

My home institution of Chulalongkorn University is the oldest and the most prestigious university in Thailand, located in the heart of Bangkok, surrounded by world class business, shopping, and cultural districts. On a national level, Thailand is very much known for its world class tourism venues ranging from beaches to temples to palaces, and very much filled with some of the kindest people in the world, and its capital of Bangkok is a modern, and cosmopolitan capital city that has hints and influences of other cities and other cultures from around the world.

(3) Please give some messages for Meiji University students /

I would like to thank every student I met for helping me out whether it be bureaucratic processes at the city offices, or speaking exercises at my beginner-level Japanese classes, and every other little moment.
I also very much hope for great career and life success for every student I met, and I do hope to meet again whether it be in Japan, Thailand or anywhere else.

(4) Please give some messages for international students who wish to come and study at Meiji University as an exchange student. /

It is very much a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially the fact that you will get to experience Tokyo in the eyes of a local, surrounded by friendly locals and other international students who are here for the same thing. Seize this moment if the circumstances allow, and you will not regret it at all.
