実習期間: 2023年8月16日(水)〜9月10日(日)
テーマ: Homestay-based Study abroad program

目的(実習のねらい):

The primary goal of this homestay-based study abroad program was to provide students with the chance to improve their English ability, while at the same time giving them opportunities to both learn about American culture, and to deepen their understanding of American business practices. Students were able to sharpen their communication ability through various classroom activities including completing a final presentation project in which they described their plan for the creation of a new company. In addition to their classroom learning, students had the opportunity to visit companies in the Portland Orgon area to learn first-hand about aspects of real-world American business activities. Moreover, organized field trips to local areas such as Cannon Beach and the Columbia River Gorge allowed students to experience some of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest region of the USA. Finally, through various activities done together with their homestay families provided students with insights into everyday life in the United States.

実習報告:
This homestay program was done over a period of three and a half weeks, from August 16 to September 10 at Portland State University. A total of eight students participated in the program. Students were accompanied by a chaperone on their flight from Japan to the USA on August 16, and the chaperone left on August 21.

August 18, an orientation was held in which various aspects of the program were discussed including how to make the most of homestay life, the basics of the Portland transportation system and a short safety seminar. During the orientation, the class rosters were also decided. The orientation session ended with a brief campus tour.

August 21, the first day of classes was held. The teachers at Portland State university immediately had the students communicate together in English encouraging a friendly, communicative class environment from the beginning of the course with an emphasis on using English as much as possible. After the first day of classes the students went on a walking tour of the downtown area of Portland. This was the final day for the chaperone to attend the program.

Along with the regularly scheduled classes each day the students were able to participate in the following:
August 22, a field trip to the Oregon coast
August 23, a Portland culture and business walks around Portland
August 25, a visit to ADX Design Exchange to learn about American business practices
August 29, a panel discussion with American business students
August 30, Day trip to the Columbia River Gorge for sightseeing and a visit to a local outlet shopping mall
September 1, a presentation by a Japanese entrepreneur who started a business in Portland.
September 5-6, preparation for final presentation
September 7-8, final presentations, distribution of certificates and farewell lunch with the staff and teachers
September 9-10, departure day and arrival back in Japan

In all, based on the presentations that the students gave in the post-trip session, and from the grades and comments the Portland State University teachers gave to the students, the homestay-based study program was very beneficial for the students.
The report cards received from the PSU teachers not only commented on the students’ enthusiasm and confidence towards using English, but also commented on the students’ willingness to help others in the class.
The students themselves commented on how the program helped to increase their awareness of American life and culture, as well as business practices in the United States.
